Radio DJs who continue to spin "I'm the Only One" by Melissa Etheridge

Why do radio DJs insist on continually playing that horrible song by Melissa Etheridge called "I'm the Only One"? (The chorus goes "I'm the only one who'll walk across the fire for you" etc etc.) For some reason the tone of the vocals on this song always conjures the image of a toothless 80-year-old crone who's just escaped from an insane asylum and somehow wound up in the middle of a recording session. I haven't heard her other material but that's what she sounds like on this particular track, and I'm tired of hearing it every damn time I set foot in a Duane Reade or a Walgreen's. Just tonight I was sitting in a Polish restaurant trying to immerse myself in a plate of pierogies and guess what comes on the radio. Fuckin' "I'm the Only One." There's just no escaping this loathsome track and what baffles me is that any DJs think people still want to hear it.

I don't, at any rate; and, when it comes to this point, I (joke coming) emphatically do not think (joke imminent) I'm the only one.

While driving 14 hours from North Carolina to Florida, "I'm the only one" came on the radio and I found myself loudly singing along. After about half the song had passed, a verse I was unfamiliar with, as I have usually either turned the station or smashed the radio with my fist by then, came on. I stopped singing and had a moment of revelation. Like that time in a boozy night when your alcoholic haze clears away and you realize the girl you've been making out with is most definitely NOT a "6" like you've been telling yourself for the last hour. I sat quietly in the car for the next ten minutes thinking about what I had just done. True story.

For some reason, I think this is one of the best post/comment combinations I've read yet.

I'm not familiar with "I'm the Only One", but you know what's one of the biggest crimes against humanity since Cuba Gooding, Jr. won an Oscar? Melissa Ethridge's "I Need to Wake Up" winning an Oscar for Best Original Song. Any budding singer/songwriter might as well just throw in the towel right now. That shit is bananas.

Sounds like I'm fortunate, living in the UK - haven't the track or of this particular warbling mad crone. But I do sympathise, as I'm too long in the tooth to not have experienced this type of radio head drilling many times. Though I recall, as a teenager, giving myself similar 'self abuse' (I once put a tape together, that played 'Hey Jude' 25 times in a row!?), I remember clearly the release of 'Sugar Sugar' by The Archies - it was everywhere! While I recognised it was as memorable as 'Happy Birthday to you', I hated it instantly, and then couldn't get the damn thing out of my head for 3 weeks!
"DA da - da da da da - daa da!" Noooooooo!!
Graet Blog BTW
