Dear Wilco,

Your new album, much as it pains me to say it, sucks. What a disappointment. In five years, you've gone from the pop opus of "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart" to . . . I don't even know what. How do you describe an album that, after a half dozen listens, leaves no impression whatsoever? Crap - that's how.

Jeff Tweedy, et al., I'm going to see you in concert tomorrow, and while it's unreasonable to ask you to skip these latest songs altogether in favor of your excellent back catalog, if you're going to perform a few tracks from Sky Blue Sky, could you at least tighten them up and breathe a little life into them? Thanks.

Looser than this album is the Smashing Pumpkins' (well at least Billy Corgan and some other guy) attempt to drain the vampire world of more money by cranking out another garbage album.

Yeah, I second that: Tighten-up, Tweedy. It's not even that the album is bad so much as it's nowhere near as amazing as anything else you've ever done. Go put your brilliant pants back on and get back in the studio.

i wonder (sadly) if Tweedy's (and Corgan's?) brilliance is diminished now that he is sober and not in existential crisis songwriting mode. the best songs are born out of pure love or anguish. On the other hand, can you imagine how music would have changed for the better if Hendrix hadn't overdosed after only FOUR YEARS of putting out records? That man was such a genius, potentially an alien.
